The Hanson Place Dental Mets improved their record to two wins and one loss by defeating the Gaines Berland Pirates 4-3. The Mets received a clutch pitching and hitting performance from William Coyle to overcome a great pitching effort from Scott Weinberger of the Pirates. Coyle gave up eight hits and struck out 10 Pirates in winning his second game of the season while Weinberger was his equal, giving up only five hits and striking out nine Mets.
The Pirates took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. However, Virun Kathait and Max Horowitz had clutch at-bats for the Mets, both fouling off several pitches until drawing walks to lead off the inning. After Steven Schwartz of the Mets was hit by a pitch (for the second time in the game) to load the bases, Coyle (1 for 3, two RBIs) drove a single through the left side of the infield to score Kathait and Horowitz with the tying and winning runs, respectively.
The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Michael Marinelli (1 for 3) drove home Scott Weinberger (2 for 3) with the game's first run. Coyle then got the final two outs in the inning to keep the game from getting out of hand. The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the first on a double by Lance Perlman (2 for 2, one RBI) which scored Schwartz. After the Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a single by Dustin Shorr (1 for 3), the Mets' Nicholas Barilla (1 for 2, one RBI) drove in Perlman to once again tie the score. The Pirates then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth before the late inning heroics by Kathait, Horowitz and Coyle won the game for the Mets. In the field, the Mets received a great effort behind the plate from Matt Loeb, while Shorr played a flawless third base for the Pirates, including a stellar play going to his left to throw out the lead batter in the bottom of the fourth inning.
