Syosset Central School District will hold its annual budget vote and school board election on Tuesday, May 16. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. at Robbins Lane School, H.B. Thompson Middle School, and Syosset High School.
The comprehensive annual school budget provides for new courses, staff development, and some instructional equipment. In addition, the district is proposing an Infrastructure and Instructional Improvements Bond, which will provide funds to accommodate increasing enrollments and make building improvements, including new windows with screens for all schools and the addition of modular classrooms. Also included in the bond projects is the installation of high-speed Internet connections for every classroom and additional computer equipment for student use. The bond, which will enable the district to borrow up to $44.6 million as needed over 10 years, will be eligible for State Aid reimbursement at 26.1 percent if approved by the state-imposed June 30 deadline. Syosset schools could then receive as much as $19 million from the state to offset the cost and debt service of the proposed projects.
Three candidates are running unopposed for open at-large seats on the Syosset School Board: Janet Cox, Wendy Stapen, and Shari Dorfman are all up for election. Members of the board of education serve a three-year term. Dr. Brian Goldstein is running unopposed for a five-year term on the Syosset Public Library Board of Trustees.
