Barbara Young, a teacher at Syosset Senior High School, was recently awarded for her efforts in helping high school students to pursue their career interests by the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF)
Young nominates students to attend forums where they are given the opportunity to explore the fields of law, medicine, intelligence or diplomacy.
"It takes an exceptional person to be a teacher," said Donna Weldin, executive director of the NYLF. "But to really look into the eyes of young people and to help them figure out some of the things they do best and what profession they wish to pursue is above the call of duty. At the National Youth Leadership Forum, we are delighted that teachers like Young are willing to take these crucial extra steps with the students."
Students are nominated based on demonstrated academic achievement and an interest in one of three core fields of study which the NYLF focuses. The young scholars from around the nation who attend the forums are introduced to industry leaders and participate in rigorous reality-based simulations that challenge their problem-solving skills and encourage them to take leadership roles in whatever career path they chose.
"We enjoy providing exceptional high school students with a first-hand glimpse of what having a career in a specific field is all about," said Weldin. "Students are faced with a vast array of topics to pique their interests. This experience will help shape their plans for the future."
