Syosset Central School District was named one of the best 100 places for music education in America in a survey sponsored by the American Music Conference, National Association for Music Education, National School Board Association, and Music Teachers National Association. Syosset was one of only three schools on Long Island recognized, and ranked number 14 in the entire country.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Carole G. Hankin, was pleased, but not very surprised by the survey findings. "Music education has always been a high priority in Syosset and has the full support of the Board of Education and the community. It is well known that the study of music, in addition to its intrinsic benefits, also serves to increase students' abilities in their academic studies across the board. Our students enjoy the entire spectrum of music education, from opera to jazz to Barber Shop Quartet singing, and everything in between.
More than 5,800 public school and independent teachers, administrators, parents, and community leaders participated in the survey, which asked detailed questions concerning funding, enrollment, student participation in music classes, and performance groups.
