On June 27, the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) Northeast Region sponsored its first annual Golf Outing to benefit Beth Israel Medical Center's Alan and Barbara Mirken Department of Neurology. The event, held at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho honored Edwin A. Levy, an NPF trustee and investment analyst who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in Nov. 1993. Outing co-chairs were Long Island residents Bob Greenberg and Gary Davis.
Over 100 golfers and dinner guests joined together to pay tribute to Ed Levy and his tireless advocacy for Parkinson's disease research. Bob Greenberg commented on the tremendous success of raising $450,000 in only the first year of the event. "Eddie Levy is a terrific human being, he has reluctantly put himself in the limelight so that others may benefit. We are blessed to be part of a community which cares so much about one another." Dr. John Rogers, director of the Betty and Morton Yarmon Center for Parkinson's Disease at Beth Israel, mentioned that not only has his awareness of the disease soared with publicity from Michael J. Fox, Janet Reno and Muhammad Ali, but due to increased funding and advancements in technology, historic strides are currently being made in developing new treatments and finding a cure.
