Town of Oyster Bay Counciwoman Bonnie Eisler will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset, which will be held on Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Syosset. This meeting is open to the public.
Eisler is planned to speak about the Master Plan for Oyster Bay and will also discuss the City of Glen Cove, under the leadership of Mayor Thomas Suozzi, and the town's successful Master Plan.
"A Master Plan would provide for guided development and intelligent use of the limited space that is left," according to the Residents Newsletter. "Lack of a master plan has resulted in, for example: a mall proposal many residents do not want, insufficient parking at the railroad station for commuters and shoppers, the constant threat to commercialized Jackson Ave. and a town that is not pedestrian friendly."
The residents group has joined the 20 other civic associations in opposition to the proposed Taubman mega-mall on Robbins Lane. "The mall would be approximately the same size as the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington except it would be built on a much smaller piece of land. Parking would be a three-story garage and traffic would be a nightmare for local residents," according to a statement made by the group.
The main concern of the residents group is the cleanup of downtown Syosset and a major setback for them has been violations of the "Pooper Scooper Law". A recent amendment by the Town Board makes it clear that waste must be cleaned immediately and dogs are not permitted in Town of Oyster Bay Parks. Police Officer Janice Boyd at the second precinct can be contacted at 573-6270 for help regarding this matter.
Residents for a more beautiful Syosset need donations of both time and money to make the garden grow and all contributions are fully tax deductible. Volunteers are needed to plant 1,000 bulbs at the Community Garden on Jackson Ave. at 10 a.m. Oct. 28. Last spring, 30 volunteers from Residents worked together to plant the beautiful garden on Jackson Ave. despite the rain. The garden was totally financed by community and business donations. A professional landscaper maintains the community garden, which is an ongoing expense. Donations of bulbs would also be appreciated. Anyone interested in volunteering should meet at 10 a.m. in front of the garden. Please being a small spade for planting. Any questions please call Lorraine at 921-8646.
