Like an Ali-Frazier championship fight the Sonics (Marcus-Kleigman) and Jazz battled back and forth in a thoroughly exciting and very exhausting basketball game. Attempting to avenge a wipeout earlier in the season against the Jazz, the third graders learned the power that teamwork and determination can provide. The parents and children got a real treat as the team finally broke out and gelled in what was a thoroughly satisfying game for those playing and watching. Despite only having five players available to play, the undermanned Sonics gave everything they had every minute of the game. Facing a well-coached and talented Jazz team that made clutch shot after clutch shot, the Sonics fighting fatigue and occasional discouragement did not let that affect their effort and performance.
Everybody contributed - defense and rebounding were especially impressive. Jake Schwarzbaum, fighting the pain of a bruised wrist the last two periods, played solidly and made a key shot toward the end of the game. Without Jacob Somers' gutsy rebounding and outstanding effort the final score would not have been nearly so close. His contribution was outstanding. Isaac Weiner, whose all around game that included at least five steals on defense, played his heart out. He scored key baskets as well. Brian Watt hit his stride slicing through the Jazz defense and leading the team in scoring. His defensive matchups were especially tough and he did a great job there as well. Mark Roth who has emerged as an all around force continued his solid play at all ends.
Losing by five points with eight minutes to play, the team cut it down to one point. Time ran out though and the Sonics lost by three at the final buzzer. To a man, though, everyone, especially coach Nathan Schwarzbaum (and, of course, the parents) were thoroughly satisfied and proud of the kids' efforts. The experience will be a building block to many future victories in both basketball and other challenges they choose to undertake.
