Residents can enjoy the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony, sponsored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6394 (VFW) and American Legion Post 175, in downtown Syosset this Memorial Day, May 28.
The parade will start at 10 a.m. at Variety Children Learning Center, formerly known as Variety Pre-Schooler's Workshop, located at 47 Humphrey Drive, Syosset. From there, participants will move north on Jackson Avenue, west on Muttontown Road, south on Queens Street, east on Underhill Boulevard to the monuments adjacent to the railroad station. Formal ceremonies will commence at 11 a.m.
As always, the VFW and American Legion officers will command and lead the parade. A ceremony will be held at the train station following the parade. There, Gus Scutari, parade coordinator, will take the podium after he marches to read the list of veterans and raise the American flag as the Syosset High School band performs.
Local politicians will also make a presentation here. Senator Carl Marcellino, Supervisor John Venditto, County Executive Thomas Gulotta, Father McComskey and Reverend Anderson were all invited to participate in the festivities.
"All are invited to this function honoring our deceased veterans who have made the supreme sacrifice in serving our country," said Scutari. "Their love and devotion to our country, their deep patriotism and sacrifices when they responded to our country's call are remembered. Honor these deceased veterans by displaying our country's flag on Memorial Day."
Participants include the American Legion Post 175, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6394, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters, Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset, Syosset Chamber of Commerce, Community Church, Faith Lutheran Church, Faith Nursery, 4H Club, St. Edwards Twirlers, Girl Scouts, Brownies, Boy Scouts and Cub Packs, Syosset Youth Football, Little League Baseball, SYAC Girls Softball, Syosset Fire Department and Auxiliary, Nassau-Suffolk Horseman's Association, Syosset High School band, St. Edwards Band, South Woods School band and Thompson Middle School band.
