Eighth-grader Elizabeth Kobak was recently recognized by the United States Tennis Association/Eastern Second /Long Island Region at its annual awards dinner held on March 7 at the Melville Marriott. Kobak, representing Jericho High School, played her way to win the 2001 Nassau County Individual Girls Tennis Championships.

Kobak's championship year, under Jericho High School Varsity Coach Colleen O'Connell, marked a Jericho first. Kobak is the first girl from the Jericho School District to win this prestigious championship. Unseeded in the tournament,13-year-old Kobak disposed of three seeded players in the event.

Anthony Cambria, curriculum associate for health, physical education and athletics, said, "All of us are proud of what you have accomplished. Such achievements are in no small part a result of tremendous work ethic, many hours of practice, goal setting and the ability to stay focused."
