By Coach Jim Corcoran
There was no scheduled league game this weekend for the Jericho 3rd/4th grade team as coaches continue to prepare for the fourth game of the season against North Babylon, which will be played this Sunday, May 5 at 10 a.m. at North Babylon. As part of that preparation, coaches Jim Corcoran and Peter Murphy made arrangements with the Syosset third and fourth-grade coach David Schneider, to play an exhibition game this past Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Jericho High School.
The coaches for both teams took this opportunity to spend time actively participating on the field during the game to support these young players and help them understand how they should react to the various game situations. There was less focus on scores and more focus on position and playing as a team.
Some of the notable bright spots for the Jericho team was the outstanding performance of all of the first year players including Jared Lyons who was able to put two shots past the Syosset goaltenders. Zachary Ganett, Michael Solomon and Brandon Rubell hustled the ball up and down the field and showed great promise as they joined the team late in the season and have added tremendous speed to the team. Alex Cohen, Jake Friedberg, Matt Bernstein, Jordan Kanzer and Christopher Nuzzolese continue to play hard and physical to scoop up the loose ground balls and ward off against the opponent's attacks. Marshall Hockauser stepped into the goal this week to keep Jericho in the game, and Robert Guber continues to be a solid and improving defensive player this season. Jordan Elguera, Dylan Murphy and Eric Zwilling have joined together to play as our third-grade attack team and are building a strong future for the team's upcoming seasons.
The Jericho Lacrosse Club is encouraging new players to come out and sign up to play this exciting sport of lacrosse with your friends and school mates. All of the players, parents, and coaches associated with the programs are excited to be a part of this sport that is quickly growing in popularity in our community. The fifth and sixth-grade team is undefeated so far this season and the middle and high school teams are having great seasons as well. The girls' program in high school is off to an exciting start as well.
Some of the opportunities for new players to join up and try lacrosse would be to register through the 11753.com website for any of the following upcoming events. The kindergarten through second grade boys and girls spring clinic starts this weekend, Saturday, May 4 at 4 p.m. at the Jericho High School. College players, Jericho coaches, as well as additional instructors will be teaching the fundamentals of the game. There will also be fall clinics for all age levels starting in September or October. Jericho will also be accepting registration for players to play on a winter indoor team. The games are played in an indoor facility and give new players an opportunity to play with the teams before the spring season starts. The Jericho Lacrosse Club will be starting a girls lacrosse program this fall and we need players and coaches for the new girls' teams. Please send any inquiries regarding any of these Jericho Lacrosse Club events via email to Jericholaxclub@aol.com.
