I take great pride in announcing my candidacy for re-election to the board of education of the Syosset Central School District in the upcoming election on May 21. It has been an honor to serve the residents, and especially the children of the district over the past six years as their trustee.

I believe I am well-qualified, both personally and professionally, to hold this important position. As a resident of Syosset for 18 years, I have two children in the high school and one child in the Village Elementary School. Over the years I have held coaching and board level positions in the Syosset Soccer Club and St. Edwards CYO. I am a member of several PTAs and past school board reporter for the Village School PTA. Presently, I am an administrator and former treasurer of The Syosset Scholarship Fund. For the past six years I have represented our school district on the Nassau BOCES Budget Advisory Committee.

Professionally, I am a CPA with over 25 years experience in the business community. I am the managing director of client services for a national securities clearing organization. Previously, I have served as the firm's treasurer and vice president of finance, as well as vice president of operations, responsible for a 300-person satellite facility.

These are exciting times for education in Syosset. In recent years our district has earned numerous awards and citations at the state and national levels, introduced innovative learning programs in all grades and achieved top-tier results in state-mandated testing. If re-elected, I will continue to work with my fellow board members, the administration and the community-at-large to ensure that the Syosset Central School District continues this record of excellence. Notwithstanding, I recognize the limitations on available resources and the need for fiscal responsibility throughout the process.

In closing, I'd like to thank the residents of this district who have provided me with support and encouragement over my past two terms. On May 21, I hope you'll re-elect me, as well as Maria Anderson and Ellen Meller.

On Tuesday, May 21, Long Islanders will have the opportunity to vote on school budgets and elect school board members. I am pleased to announce my candidacy for re-election to the Syosset Board of Education. Serving as a trustee for the past three years has been an honor filled with rewards and challenges. My education and business experience in management, accounting and personnel have provided a solid foundation for understanding the role and responsibilities of a board member. But especially my work within our community has helped to bring the thoughts and concerns of the Syosset Woodbury area to the board.

As a resident of Syosset for 21 years, I have worked in many ways to serve the children and families of our community. Although my two daughters are both graduates of Syosset High School, I am still actively involved in PTA. I served as president of the Syosset Council of PTAs and as PTA president in South Woods Middle School and South Grove Elementary School. I have been vice president, treasurer, secretary and chair of many committees and worked on numerous others. In other community activities, I am an active member of my parish, St. Edward's of Syosset. A member of the Jericho-Syosset-Woodbury Child Care Partnership, three Parliamentarian organizations, Syosset Chamber of Commerce and Syosset Rotary.

Syosset is a school district with a reputation for excellence and commitment to the education of the whole child. Although the dedicated team of professionals led by Dr. Carole G. Hankin and her administration have received national and New York State awards, they continue to build an educational program that is innovative, creative and challenges the minds of all our students.

I am proud to be a part of the Syosset team, continuing the excellence and committed to all children. On May 21, please vote to re-elect me as well as my fellow board of education members Anthony Alizzi and Ellen Meller. Thank you for your encouragement and support.

Maria A. Anderson
