A major anniversary for me is coming up in the near future. On Nov. 4 it will be eight years since I have retired from the noble practice of dentistry.

As in department stores, it is time to do an audit or inventory of those eight years.

I remember the fear in the eyes of my wife as she entertained the thought of my having nothing to do all day. She was concerned for me and my nervous energy and she was definitely concerned for herself in having to deal with this "hyper" individual. Truthfully, I had doubts but as they say in Yiddish - Schoen Zeit! It was about time.

Looking back I will have to give myself a heartfelt clap on the shoulders. I did all right.

I combined the three areas of endeavor that I would recommend to all those contemplating retirement and have led to my successful attempt at it.

I try to keep myself physically fit. Exercise can make you tired enough, at the end of a day, to allow you to sleep through the night. Eating properly in conjunction with walking, tennis, biking or whatever is also very important.

I never felt I was too old to take courses and learn. Learning is more difficult with the years. Keeping mentally fit is different for each of us. I would like to cancel my subscription to The New York Times, because of my disagreement with its editorial policy, but I do not. Every day I make an attempt to solve the Crossword Puzzle edited by Will Shortz.

I am more successful with the puzzle on some days than others. On Saturday I get the Sunday Rotogravure Puzzle and it occupies me for the whole weekend and beyond with its required mental gymnastics.

Personally, I have taken courses in English Literature (Shakespeare, James Joyce, Cervantes and Greek Tragedies), writing courses, and Bible studies at my temple. In these classrooms I have met many bright seniors with sharp minds and interesting viewpoints. Writing this weekly column for six years has forced me to think and transcribe my thoughts in an organized manner.

Doing charitable work is good for my body and inner soul. I have had a 30-year relationship with Jamaica Hospital, teaching residents. Meeting young people is a boon to both you and them. Helping others helps you!

Not every day of retirement has been sparked by earthshaking experiences. I'm not sure how I would handle constant excitement and turmoil. Do not expect to be busy and productive 24 hours a day. It won't happen!

As a final grade I am going to give myself a B+.

- The time has run off rapidly. I am still married to Lorraine.

- I have three accomplished children.

- I have four beautiful grandchildren.

- In the words of the Little Sparrow, Edith Piaf, No REGRETS!

PS: Comedians Column - Omitted names suggested by readers: Fred Allen, Robert Klein and Jimmy Durante.
