Marjam Supply Co., in green, broke its season-long losing streak by knotting Gloria Vanderbilt, in red, 1-1 on Sunday, Nov. 2. The action in Jericho Athletic Association's fourth and fifth grade girl's soccer league took place at Jackson School.
Red scored early in the game when Alexis Garay put the ball in the net on a breakaway. Green goalkeepers Amanda Stoopler and Julie Gold stopped everything else that came their way the rest of the game. Red goalies Marissa Klausner and Manleen Singh also made great saves as Lindsay Snyder, Alexis Henin, and the rest of the green offense kept the ball in red's end for much of the game. Late in the first half, Klausner blocked a shot by Lauren Lazarus but was unable to clear the ball. Rebecca Shinners passed the rebound to Gold, who tied the game with her second goal of the season.
The aggressive red offense was highlighted by Lauren Wiener's corner kicks and give-and-go's set up by Rachel Wasserman. Samantha Debello and Garay worked well together passing the ball up the field. Green had excellent scoring opportunities in the second half, but tough shots by Lazarus, Amy Setton, and Melissa Reade were all turned aside by Singh. Anna Buller and Sydney Reade controlled the midfield for green.
The green defense featured booming clearing kicks by Kristen Hachmann in the middle. Lauren Moskovic and Shanen McElhinney plugged up the two sidelines. But red's Amanda Hyman frustrated many of the clearing attempts, and Wasserman's sensational block of one of Hachmann's kicks resulted in a short delay when the ball struck her in the face.
