Commissioner Bachteler Re-Elected in Jericho
In Tuesday's Jericho Fire Commissioner election, 356 residents showed their support and voted. Incumbent Commissioner Lawrence Bachteler, Jr. was re-elected by a margin of 203 votes to challenger Howard Pastolove's 153 votes.

Retired Syosset Teacher Writes Second Book
Dr. Mario Macaluso was born in Italy in 1939 and he immigrated to the United States with his mother and sister when he was 18 years old. At that time, he didn't speak a word of English. After learning the language by watching television and other self-taught methods, Macaluso decided to continue his studies in the United States and attend school.

JAA Fifth and Sixth-Grade Girls Basketball
The Woodbury Common's Mystics opened the 2002-2003 season with a 29-12 victory over the Andrew Marc Monarchs at Cantiague School. The Mystics were led by senior guards Shana Feibus and Alison Kinzer with 8 and 11 points, respectively. With the game close early on, the defensive play of Jessica Weingast and the scoring of freshmaan Marissa Terrasi, 4 points, Samantha Gordon, 4 points and Cole Snheider, 2 points, allowed the Mystics to pull away. Rachel Rosner, Jamie Scheinthal and Sanchita Menra played great games on both ends of the court for the Mystics. THe Monarchs were led by the balance scoring of Jessica Graf and Alison Gluck with 6 points each and the play of Pamela Bortnick.
