Sarah Landsman of Syosset recently captured the 14-year-old age category at the GHI Hamlet Junior Tennis Challenge, which took place at the Hamlet Golf & Country Club in Commack. Landsman defeated Meg Tyner of Brookville, 7-6 (4), 7-5 for the championship.
In all, eight winners were crowned - four boys and four girls - in their respective age categories. Each winner earned the right to step on the court and exchange ground strokes with some of the ATP's best men's players at the TD Waterhouse Cup presented by Roslyn Savings Bank, which will be contested August 16-24 at the Hamlet Golf & Country Club. Reigning French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, World No. 11 and defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan, and native New Yorker James Blake have already committed to the L.I. pro event.
Other champions crowned were: Leah Kepping of Northport (Girls 12); Zachary Weiss of Great Neck (Boys 12); Dillon Pottish of East Quogue (B 14); Christina Tu of Greenvale (G 16); Mauric Lao of Great Neck (B 16); Stacy Lee of Old Westbury (G 18) and Robert Palliser of Glen Cove (B 18).
The GHI Hamlet Jr. Tennis Challenge winners are tentatively scheduled to take the court against some of the world's best men's players on the evening of Monday and Tuesday, August 18-19. For the last six years, boy and girl winners of the GHI Hamlet Jr. Tennis Challenge have had the chance to step on the same court and experience the thrill of a lifetime, exchanging ground strokes with some of the elite professionals.
This is the third year Group Health Incorporated (GHI) is sponsoring the Hamlet Jr. Tennis Challenge. GHI also sponsors the GHI Hamlet Tennis Circuit and Metropolitan Challenge, a pair of USTA Eastern Section-sanctioned events contested in the greater New York metropolitan area.
