The Syosset Flames and Syosset Xtreme enjoyed a winning weekend of softball games played on a summer-like weekend November 1-2. The teams comprise the travel program of SYAC Girls Softball and are sponsored by Braces by Drs. Frankel & Sokoloff of Woodbury.
On Saturday, the Flames beat East Meadow by a score of 15-13 in a well-played thriller. The winner was decided by outstanding defense in the late innings in a contest that went down to the last out. That same day, the Xtreme topped Three Villages by a 28-12 margin in a 25-hit attack. The Xtreme went on to beat East Meadow on Sunday 22-6 before being edged 6-3 by Glen Cove.
The Flames led East Meadow for most of Saturday's game, with good pitching from Natalie Taback and steady defense from Dana Singer at first base and Jessie Ackerman at shortstop. Julie Gold and Yassamin Issapour contributed big hits for the Flames offense, and both Yassamin and Erica Buki stole home. The Flames took at 15-8 lead into the final sixth inning, but East Meadow mounted a serious rally in their last ups to come within two runs of tying the game. With the bases filled with East Meadow players, Flames catcher Yassamin made two successive tags at home plate to stifle the rally and preserve a hard-fought win. Also contributing to the Flames win were Allison Kamin, Rachel & Stacie Perl. The Flames are 5-3 on the season.
The Syosset Xtreme, playing at home on Saturday, put on their hitting shoes in a 25-hit attack that vaulted them over Three Villages 28-12. The offensive show was highlighted by Casey Murphy, who crushed a ball to the outfield for a two-run homer. Collecting four hits apiece were Zoe Saunders and Kristen Carton, who also drove in five runs. Mallory Sanchez scored four times in the game, while Melissa Kaufman and Lindsay Murphy crossed the plate three times each.
The Xtreme got strong pitching performances by a trio of Shelby Rosen, Kristen Carton and Jennifer Zink.
On Sunday, the Xtreme split two games. Under sunny skies and summery temperatures, the Xtreme got hot with 10 hits and smart base running that took advantage of walks from East Meadow pitching. The Xtreme cruised to an easy 22-6 win. Mallory Sanchez and Rose Bloomberg both stroked three hits, and Rose drove in three runs. Shelby Rosen scored four runs and powered a towering fly to left field for a double. A pitching trio of Jennifer Zink, Kristen Carton and Ashley Sandler kept East Meadow runners to a minimum all game.
In the second Sunday game, the Xtreme and Glen Cove staged a pitcher's duel, with precious few runs for either team in a 6-3 Glen Cove win. Xtreme starter Shelby Rosen put out a Glenn Cove threat in the first inning with two timely strikeouts and a pop-up and then held opponents scoreless in the second with two more strikeouts. The Xtreme scored in the bottom of the first, on a key hit by Lily Mummert. Glen Cove scratched out two runs in the third and fourth innings before Syosset scored again in the fifth off hits by Lauren Margolies and Melissa Kaufman.
Glen Cove pushed across two runs in the fifth before a potential big inning was stifled by a great catch in deep right field by Lindsay Murphy. Glen Cove scored two more runs in the sixth. The Xtreme scored one run in the bottom of the sixth with aggressive base running by Ashley Sandler and Lindsay Murphy, but they fell short as the game ended 6-3.
Dana Fried and Lily Mummert made several good plays at shortstop to nip fast Glen Cove runners at first. Lily Mummert pitched two strong innings for Syosset. The Xtreme are 5-2 this fall season, which wraps up November 9.
