The Syosset High School Roller Hockey Club is making believers out of everyone. League President, Dean Spinato had this to say: "We knew they would be good because they had a lot of players returning from last year's championship team. The fact that they have Jonathan Mosenson, just made the expectations that much higher. They have just been totally dominating. What is more amazing is that I know that Syosset's Coach David Mosenson has put limits on Jonathan's scoring. I really believe Jonathan could score 8 goals a game if David let him. David wants to teach what the true meaning of winning and losing is all about. His team has learned how to win a very dignifying way without belittling their opponents."
Spinato also said that Coach Mosenson probably learned how to deal with coaching a superstar from his father. "I just learned the other day that David's father coached Wilt Chamberlain in high school and his team was named the best high school basketball team ever," said Spinato.
It's every goalie's dream to play as a skater. In this game, Syosset goalie Matt Anello played skater and Max Altschuler played goalie. While Syosset allowed some goals, the eventual outcome was never in doubt. The score was 4-0 before West Babylon scored its first goal, and the first half ended with Syosset leading 7-4. "Max had a tough time in the first half getting used to having all that equipment on him and was really tired. He did much better in the second half as he only let up one goal while Syosset scored 6 goals."
Syosset's scoring was led by Jonathan Mosenson who scored 6 goals and added an assist. The balance of the scoring came from Jonathan Fuss with 2 goals and 2 assists, Louis Judge and Brian David each had 2 goals. Aaron Davis also added a goal.
In spite of another convincing win, Syosset was dealt a blow because their star defender Jonathan Fuss might miss the next 6 weeks of the season due an illness. "This is a serious blow to our team, but Jonathan will be back well before the playoffs. Coach Mosenson is sure as the sun shines that all the players on the team will overcome this setback. Unfortunately, they all learned how to deal with setbacks last year with Jeff's death. If they could deal with that, this is nothing. They won't let this season fall apart.
Syosset also played without Max Altschuler, the teams 2nd leading scorer and still came away with a convincing victory. Assistant Coach Mark Brand said that Coach Mosenson also asked his son Jonathan not to dominate this game. He felt it was important for the team to realize that they could beat a good Kennedy team without Fuss, Altschuler, and Mosenson. He felt it would be a real confidence booster.
It took some time for Syosset to get their act together, and at the end of the first half, Syosset was only leading 2-1. It was the closest any team had been to them all year at halftime. The second half was a different story and Syosset totally dominated and scored 3 goals while allowing none to walk away with the 5-1 victory. With Jonathan Mosenson having been told not to dominate he only had 1 goal but did have 3 assists. Andrew Stern had 2 goals. One of them was off a pass from Brian Davis that coach Mosenson said was one of the nicest plays he had ever seen. Other goals were scored by Danny Kubryk and Brian Davis.
This was a game that was ended one minute into the 2nd half because of Syosset having an 8 goal lead. Assistant Syosset Coach Mark Brand thought this was going to be a tougher game, but Kennedy was missing several of its players. As a matter of fact, they only had their goalie and 5 skaters. This was another game where Syosset let Danny Kubryk play goalie and their usual goalie Matt Anello again played as a skater. To give you an idea of how much of a miss match this was, Danny not only had a shutout (he only had to stop 2 shots), but he also got an assist on a Mosenseon goal.
Syosset's scoring was led by Jonathan Mosenson who had 4 goals and 1 assist. Other scoring was done by Max Altschuler who had 2 goals and an assist, and Aaron Davis who had one goal.
