Several weeks ago someone stole into our neighborhood and surreptitiously removed all of the postal boxes. When I called the Postal Inspector to inquire about this I was told that the Postal Service had removed the boxes. They claimed that the mailboxes were being underutilized. I find this claim to be dubious just from observing the amount of activity that occurred at one of my local mailboxes. Clearly this is an attempt to cut back on services. The Post Office wonders why they are losing market share to private companies. Restricting services is not a way to increase business. Once a service is removed it is almost never replaced. A first step, if necessary, could have been to cut back on pickups at those boxes from twice a day to once a day. I encourage all persons who care about the quality of the postal service they receive to call their postal inspector and ask that the removed mailboxes be restored.
