The SYAC Xtreme softball team won both ends of a doubleheader against Three Villages in a great day for softball at the Syosset/Woodbury Community Park on October 2. The Xtreme hung on for a close 6-5 win in the first game, a contest marked by excellent pitching on both sides. The Xtreme then blew out their opponents in a 16-9 win in the bottom end of the double bill.
Pitching fine games for the Xtreme were the combined forces of Lily Mummert, Shelby Rosen and Jennifer Zink in the first game and Cathy and Nikki Tang in the second game. Hitting was highlighted by a booming two-run homer by Andrea Zalin and a two-run triple by Dana Fried. Melissa Kaufman sparked the defensive play with two great tags at the plate that cut down opposition threats in their tracks. Stroking two hits apiece in the second games were , Erica Buki, Julie Gold, Zoe Saunders and Andrea Zalin. Marissa Terrasi had a two-run double that capped a first inning rally in the first game.
Two other Syosset softball teams also saw action last weekend in the same Wesco ASA League. The Syosset Cyclones U16 played to two losses in Oyster Bay on Oct. 3 against a hard-hitting Jaguars team. Dayna Heller stroked a two-run homer in the first game that put Syosset ahead early. The Cyclones mounted several two-out rallies in the second game but fell a few runs short of victory. Pitching for Syosset were Amanda Fachler and Nicole Freedman. Ali Cohen did a fine job in her debut as catcher. Providing tight defense were Sophie and Lily Mummert and Alexa Gross.
Also playing that day was the Syosset Cyclones U18 squad, who dropped two games to Newfield at the Syosset/Woodbury Community Park, The Cyclones were edged 6-5 in the opener, despite a rousing five-run rally in the final inning. The Cyclones fell behind 9-0 in the second game before the game was called for darkness. Pitching for the Cyclones were Jayshree Narandran and Ali Ballensweig.
