With the sweet scent of almost-summertime in the air, the playoffs for the SYAC Girls Softball season are well underway!
The Junior League kicked off the playoffs on June 8, with a series of games at ball fields all around Syosset and Woodbury. Senior League playoffs began June 9, and Pony League playoffs followed on June 10.
This spring season, over 600 girls are participating in SYAC Softball, and an expanded SYAC Travel Program is planned for the fall. Visit www.syacgs.org for more details.
In a dramatic Round 1 game in the SYAC Junior League playoffs, the Wacky Pack led all the way in defeating Camhi's Cuspids by a score of 13-7 on June 10 at Hap Harris Field in Syosset. Pitcher Nivia Suresh went all the way for the Pack, striking out nine and getting the game-winning RBI. Angela Balkunas hit for the cycle, capping the scoring by diving headfirst into home with a homer in the sixth.
Amanda Rutkowski had a big hit and fielded flawlessly at first for the Pack. Lauren Riegel had two hits including a triple. Samantha Schwarz had two hits and made the key fielding play of the game at third. Rebecca Price rose from her sick bed to play, and she lined a key single in the four run first. Victoria Laine had three singles. Bailey Donovan had two big hits. Katherine Alejo and Irvind Buttar had key hits.
Camhi's Cuspids were led by the hitting, pitching and fielding of Alexa Sadowski. Rachel Beck and Rachel Solomon had key hits and fielded great. Hannah Cahmi had two big hits and made two great plays at third. Lauren Barazani had a big double to key the five run sixth inning. Julia Miltakis did a fine job as catcher.
