On Wednesday, Sept. 21, Syosset Public Library reopened, serving residents from a portion of the building, separated from the area under construction.
While the main library is expanded and modernized, library users can select from a wide array of books, DVDs, music CDs and recorded books in the temporary "Syosset Express Library," located in the northeast portion of the building.
Library Director Judy Lockman said, "We don't have space for public access computers, but our top-notch staff will do whatever it takes to help children, students and adults with their information needs."
Certain services have been expanded to better assist the public. Lisa Caputo, head of Reference and Adult Services said that librarians will print out material and photocopy assignment related information at no cost to district residents.
Staff will quickly respond to questions e-mailed through the website at www.nassaulibrary.org/syosset. As always, librarians can interloan books not just throughout the county, but also through a worldwide library network. Teen Librarian Ed Goldberg compiled "High School to College" packets and these will be distributed for free to district families who visit the Syosset Express Library. Both librarians Ed Goldberg and Pamela Martin, head of Children's Services, plan year-round reading clubs with incentive prizes, so that students of all ages will keep library visits in their weekly schedules.
"Leisure reading is a top priority at the Syosset Express," said Lockman. "We stocked the Express with extra copies of new and popular fiction and non-fiction, and will keep these shelves full so that our readers won't be disappointed."
Lockman encourages residents to use their library. "We're hoping the community will be pleasantly surprised at what we can do and what we want to do to serve the public while building construction is ongoing."
