At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department responded to a serious auto accident with entrapment at the intersection of South Oyster Bay Road and Woodbury Road.

Engine 5855 was the first-arriving piece of apparatus and its crew quickly went to work to assess the stability of the vehicle and the condition of the one victim who remained entrapped in one of the automobiles, which was pinned up against a large traffic light pole. Engine 5855's crew then began to deploy their TNT hydraulic rescue tools and a precautionary hose line, in case of fire. They were joined in the extrication efforts by the crew of Heavy Rescue 588. Together, the two teams of firefighters removed the driver's side door and several parts of the vehicle's frame to allow for the safe removal of the front seat passenger. The driver of this vehicle was able to exit the vehicle prior to the fire department's arrival. Both occupants were taken to the Trauma Center at Nassau University Medical Center by Nassau County Police Ambulance. Two victims in a second car were taken to North Shore Hospital - Syosset with minor injuries via the SFD's ambulance 5891. A total of 12 SFD units and 38 firefighters responded to this emergency scene.
