SYAC Travel Softball teams won three of four games played on a gem of a warm fall day on October 30.
The SYAC Xtreme topped the Smithtown/St. James Red Falcons 9-8 in a nailbiter in the first game. They staged a late-inning rally in the second game but fell short 14-12.
The SYAC Flames took two games from the Smithtown/St. James Red Bombers. The Flames edged the Bombers 10-9 in the first game, then with a depleted squad held on for a 19-17 victory in the second game. The Flames, in their first year out, achieved an 8-4 record and placed third in the highly competitive National Junior Softball League. Coaches Bob Mitchell, Ben Jacobsohn and Bruce Littman did an outstanding job with a squad that surely will be a formidable force in the future.
The Xtreme got great performances from pitcher Jen Zink and catcher Yaz Issapour in their 9-8 win. Clutch hits came off the bats of Malory Sanchez, Yaz Issapour, Dana Singer and Taylor Tully. Jen Zink won the game in the bottom of the sixth with a towering fly ball that fell in for a triple. With teammate Ollie Faden ready to drive her in, Zink scampered home on a passed ball for the winning run.
The Xtreme pounded out 10 hits in the second game, with major power supplied by Jen Zink, Malory Sanchez and Taylor Tully. Dana Aronowitz and Alexis Farber made outstanding plays in the field. Emma Vradis scored four runs on the day to lead the scoring.
