Susan Cortese, a resident of Jericho, first got involved with Making Strides for Breast Cancer three years ago. At that time, she was 40-years-old and had newly become a survivor of lung cancer. She was so excited to be able to take part in the fundraiser, that she made a promise to herself, her husband Lou and her boys that for as long as she lives, they would walk as a family to raise money for cancer research.
That first year, with help from her friend Kim, she was able to raise over $3,000. Last year, she set her goal higher and she raised a thousand more. So, on Oct. 16, she set her goal even higher.
The morning of the walk arrived, and after eight days of bad weather, the sun was out. She registered her team of 19, Cortese and Sons Home Improvement Corp. Together, they raised over $8,000. There were more helpers this year than any year - many new friends joined in the walk.
This was the first year that the American Cancer Society had enabled walkers to set up their own personal page to raise money over the computer. Cortese became the third highest individual fundraiser. She has raised $5,793. As a team, they raised $8,231. Becoming the fifth highest ranked team.
"If you set your mind to it, you can get a lot support and achieve anything you want in life," said Cortese. "My sons have already asked what my goal is for next year, and I answer with a smile, 'you'll have to wait and see.' Thanks to everyone who sponsored me. You have reaffirmed my faith that we are a giving and caring world."
