County's Political Merry-Go-Round Continues to Spin
Nassau Republican legislators have appealed last week's Supreme Court decision in which Judge Joseph P. Spinola nullified a vote making Republican Peter Schmitt presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature. The judge also ordered that the Nassau County Legislature reconvene, with all 19 legislators present, and remain in session until a presiding officer is elected with a minimum 10-vote majority. In his decision, Spinola stated that "it is undisputed that every presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature since its inception in 1995 has been elected with 10 or more votes."

Author Jeannette Walls Visits Borders in Syosset
Gossip columnist Jeannette Walls of MSNBC gave a talk to a crowd of inspired readers at Syosset Borders last Thursday, about her moving memoir The Glass Castle, available from Scribners in bookstores. This marks the third week the book is on The New York Times paperback bestseller's list, and has been optioned by Brad Pitt for a possible future movie.

Final Sign-Up for SYAC Girls Softball 2006
SYAC Girls Softball announces a final date for girls to sign up and be evaluated for the spring softball season. A sign-up and player evaluation will take place at H.B. Thompson Middle School on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost for the SYAC 2006 Season is $85, payable by check or cash at the time of sign-up.
