The Syosset Parent-Teacher-Student Association recently created a website to give residents information about the upcoming school board election, library board election and budget vote.
According to their website, the Syosset Council of PTA's was organized in 1954 and includes representatives from all 11 PTA/PTSA units in the Syosset Central School District. It forms a part of the Nassau District and the New York State PTA, a branch of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.
The council voting body consists of the president, the principal and six delegates from each elementary unit. The secondary schools are represented by the president, the principal, assistant principals as well as seven delegates from each middle school, and fourteen delegates from the high school. SEPTA is represented by the president, the director of Pupil Personnel Services and six delegates. The superintendent of schools is also a voting member of the council.
Their mission is to strengthen and coordinate the activities of its member units, to promote cooperation and communication on community-wide projects, programs and activities that will fall within the scope of PTA objectives.
The website, which can be viewed at www.syossetptsa.org, requests that school and library board candidates send in their bio to be posted on the website. Information regarding candidates' background, their line of work, community activities and education will all be posted. No candidate is required to submit the information, but all are strongly encouraged to do so.
According to the website, information on the candidates will be available after April 20. Also, the "Know Your Candidates Forum," which is presented by the Syosset Council of PTAs will be held on Monday, May 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Syosset Little Theater. This event is open to all residents and will be moderated by the League of Women Voters of Nassau County.
