The Jericho High School Alumni Hall of Fame hosted their 16th Annual Induction Ceremony on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at the Jericho Public Library. Students, faculty, administration and the members of the board of education joined family, friends and members of the community to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of 2006 Inductees Jon Carin, Celia Felsher, Bruce Friedman, Geraldine Kalfus-Gurman and Jill Seelig.
Jon Carin, a graduate of the class of 1982, was recognized for his accomplishments in the field of music. As a longtime member of the group Pink Floyd, Carin has mastered the art of producing and writing music, playing guitar, bass, keys, drums and vocals. He has played in a variety of well-known charity projects including Live Aid, Concert for 9/11 in NYC and 4 Seasons of Hope Charity. During these events, he has played with Seal, Elvis Costello, Daryl Hall and others.
Celia Felsher, a member of the class of 1972, is a partner in Reservoir Capital, a premier investment firm. In addition to her law career, she was elected to the Mamaroneck School District Board of Education in 2000, was re-elected in 2003, and then elected to serve as Board President in 2004. As a member of the Mamaroneck School Board, she has led efforts to modernize the district and secure community support for the budget.
Bruce Friedman, a graduate of the class of 1976, was recognized for his multiple fundraising efforts to support lymphoma research and the American Cancer Society in memory of his brother, Mark J. Friedman. He was also honored as a local chiropractor, who is committed to his patients. In addition, Bruce recently became a certified EMT for the Jericho Fire Department.
Geraldine Kalfus-Gurman is a dance and drama educator who graduated with the class of 1964. She has performed with the Call for Peace Drum and Dance Company since 1993. Geraldine belongs to the Madison, Wisconsin Arts Board and Dance Council and has performed in the Anna Nassif Dance Theater as a co-choreographer. In addition, she works alongside high school students as the choreographer for numerous shows.
Jill Seelig, a member of the class of 1979, is the vice president/publisher of O, Oprah Magazine. After beginning a career as an accountant, Jill realized that this line of work wasn't what she expected. She was able to, successfully combine her two main interests, magazines and selling ads into a profession that she enjoys. Jill worked for New York magazine and SELF magazine before becoming the Publisher and later vice president of O, Oprah Magazine. During the induction ceremony, Jill announced the formation of an internship for a Jericho student interested in a similar career. The details will be worked out in the coming months.
Jericho High School teacher Nicholas Maraventano did an outstanding job as the Master of Ceremonies for this memorable evening. Student presenters for the occasion included Stefanie Aquilina, Sarah Bernstein, Alex Jacobs, Alexandra Laks and Jason Levine. Students Alexandra Laks, Charles LoPresto and Zachary Resnik performed a lively rendition of Friendship from Anything Goes. Barbara Murphy was recognized and honored for her role as past Master of Ceremonies.
District administrators and members of the board of education thanked the Hall of Fame Committee members: Robert Hoffman, Nicholas Maraventano, Judy Ornstein and Mary Vitale, and nominating committee members: Bernice Baiman, George Batjiaka, Louis Boroson, Selma Constant, Howard Jankowitz, Janet Kesner and Arthur Kaminsky for their efforts in making this evening an outstanding event. The Hall of Fame highlights the diversified accomplishments of Jericho Alumni. Each inductee serves as a role model of excellence for current Jericho students.
