In September 2005 Syosset Public Library began a major renovation and expansion project. A small portion of the building, The Syosset Express Library served the public during construction.
Library Director Judith Lockman explained, "Construction is on schedule, and we 're approaching the finish line, but, the Syosset Express Library will close as of October 9, so that the project can be completed." Lockman thanked the community for their patience and support, and said that "your beautiful new library will open to the public on January 2, 2007."
While the building is closed:
• The express library will be demolished.
• Plumbing, electricity, and data cabling installations will be finalized.
• Installation and testing of the fire sprinkler system will be undertaken.
• Painting and flooring will be completed.
• Furniture and shelving will be delivered and assembled.
• 240,000 previously stored books and AV items will be returned.
• The parking lot will be re-graded and seal-coated.
• Public computers and the new automated Circulation System will be installed.
Lockman stated that residents can look forward to many enhancements in their new library. "With a capacity for more than 350,000 books, films, CDs, recorded books, magazines and newspapers, we have the largest library building in Nassau County. Comfortable seating areas will encourage residents to enjoy an afternoon at the library. There will be an expanded Children's Room with storytime space designed for multigenerational activities. Adults and children will enjoy new public access computers. Middle school and high school students will have their own area, supervised by our teen librarian. The 150 seat auditorium will house musical performances, lectures, movies, and small theatre presentations. An adjacent art gallery with state-of-the-art lighting will showcase rotating exhibits. Visitors can enjoy coffee, tea and light snacks from a small cafe next to the magazine and newspaper area. An enlarged media center includes a listening room with comfortable seating," she said.
While the library is closed, Lockman urges residents to use the website, www.nassaulibrary.org/syosset for continuing updates, or to call the library at 921-7161.
