Susan Menkes, an art teacher at the Cantiague Elementary School, was honored as a member of the 2006 All-USA Teacher Team on October 19, 2006. Menkes is one of only 20 educators from across the nation selected for this USA Today team of outstanding teachers. As a winner in the ninth annual teacher recognition program, Menkes will share a $2500 award with her school.
Teachers from kindergarten through 12th grade nationwide are nominated each year for the All-USA Teacher Team. Winners are selected in a two-step judging process that considers how well nominees define and meet their student's needs, and the influence they have on students and learning. "Through enthusiasm, energy and innovation, these extraordinary teachers are making a difference for their students, their schools and their communities," USA TODAY editor Ken Paulson says. "It's our honor to recognize their impressive achievements."
This award is a reflection of the important role that the arts play in Jericho, despite today's test-centered climate. "We have tried here, while meeting all mandates, to embrace the arts," explained Jericho Superintendent Hank Grishman. "We strive to provide all of our students with a well-rounded and enriched educational experience."
Menkes, the only honoree from the state of New York, was delighted with the recognition because it highlights the district's ongoing commitment to art education. "I really am proud to accept this award because it validates and emphasizes the importance that art education plays in our district and should have in other districts," said Susan. "I'm also proud that our district supports and encourages the art program."
