The intersection of Cold Spring Road and Syosset-Woodbury Road is known by local drivers to be very dangerous. A blinking light currently exists, but under the Hamlet Revitalization Plan, the Department of Public Works agreed to put in a traffic light.
Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs has been working on solutions for this intersection for over five years and finally had public works agree to the traffic light. "I am only for the traffic light if the majority of the residents want the traffic light. Traffic lights are expensive and it was for the safety of everyone," she said.
According to Jacobs, the people that live along Cold Spring Road are concerned that if a traffic light goes in there, drivers will use the smaller streets as a way to avoid the light.
Another solution that was presented was a roundabout. "The first reaction from Public Works regarding the roundabout was absolutely not," said Jacobs. "Now they have offered to review it again and see if the space that is available would allow a roundabout."
Jacobs cautioned that one of the drawbacks to a roundabout is that it might involve some condemnation of property. "You do have houses that come right up to the intersection," said Jacobs.
The blinking light that is currently there will remain at the intersection while public works does further studies. Jacobs said that the traffic light and the roundabout are both still possibilities at this point. "I am not closing the door on this - we need to make this intersection safe," said Jacobs. "Hopefully when everything is said and done, a majority of the people will be happy. Safety is our number one issue."
