The Syosset Giants (9-1) Youth Freshman Class A (8-year-olds) capped off a nearly perfect season by beating the Massapequa Jets (9-1) 27-6 in the final round of what was a very grueling playoff schedule. The game was played in front of nearly 100 friends and family on the new turf field at Syosset Woodbury Park.
Syosset's defense, led by Jack Grunberg, Matty Wiener, Jason Wasserman, Sam Sternchein, Joe Maracic, Brian Katz and Chase Canner, shut out their opponent for the sixth straight game. Sternchein had two huge interceptions, and diving tackles by Wierner and Grunberg capped off another amazing performance of the Big Blue defense.
Cameron Biegel, Jacob Neiderfer, Kyle Young, Brett Stein, Brandon Feit, Harry Schorr, Dean Abada, Jake Lubin and Robert Roth played as one cohesive unit on offense, scoring more points than any team in the league this season. Biegel led the offense, scoring a rushing touchdown and throwing for another to Young.
With a score of only 6-0 at halftime, the team held a players-only meeting. They talked about the desire, passion, hard work and "never giving up" attitude that got them to this point of the season. "That was the one thing we emphasized during the entire season, and the kids really took to it," said coaches Steve Biegel, Marc Neiderfer and Darren Grunberg. "They were poised, they were prepared and they were disciplined. We are so proud of the 16 kids who made up the 2006 LIFFL Superbowl Championship team."
