Opinion

What a terrific article by Robert McMillan on Stop Push One for English. This country was once a melting pot. Immigrants came here and not only worked hard to make this country great, but they learned the language of our land, English. I cannot understand why our country has not made English our National Language. It has been voted down by the powers that be in Congress, but I wonder what would happen if "the people" were given the chance to vote on this issue? This will never come to pass, but one can always hope.

If we have press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish, then Mr. McMillan is correct, why not have 3 for Chinese and 4 for Bengali? Why not segregate the country even more by having everyone speak a different language? Immigrants who do come here legally should be required to learn the English language, not the other way around. Just think about how much money our government would and could save if documents, recordings, signs, etc. were only in one language...English.

As my favorite T-shirt says: WELCOME TO AMERICA, NOW SPEAK ENGLISH.
