With a crack of the bat, Erica Brophy sent a ball hurtling toward second base and sent Priya Suresh scampering home from third to seal a 7-6 win for the Syosset Thunder over the rival Plainview Pythons. The win, which took two-and-a-half hours and an extra inning to cement, maintained a perfect 5-0 season for the U10 SYAC travel softball team, one of three SYAC teams competing this summer in the Glen Cove Mayor's Trophy.
Contributing to the energizing win were a pitching combo of Danielle Zurek, Maddy Sanchez and Alexa Beovich. Showing aggressiveness on the basepaths were Arianna Fassano, Nicole Keenan, and Kirsten Mullin. After the Thunder jumped in front 4-0, the Pythons fought back and tied the score before going ahead twice. Plainview's aggressive running game was stopped cold in the seventh inning by a spectacular throw-out by then-catcher Danielle Zurek to Elise Maturo, who slapped on the tag at second base.
Also competing in the Glen Cove Mayor's Trophy are the Syosset Storm, a U10 team, and the Syosset Tornado, a U12 squad.
All three softball teams are part of the SYAC Travel Program, which also fields teams in the fall and spring seasons. More than 600 girls from grades K through 8 participate in SYAC's main softball program each spring. Sign-up dates are in January and February. For more information: www.syacgs.org.
