Opinion

On March 26, 1999 I wrote a column on the beauties and intricacies of golf. The column featured Nick Graziose, a 26-year resident of Hicksville. On that date he was 48 years old and a father of three (two girls, one boy) and the head of maintenance at the original Hamlet Condominium. Add eight years and one grandchild and voila, you have Nick Graziose of 2007. I decided to ask Nick the exact same questions about golf that I asked in 1999. Here are Nick's answers:

Q - Nick, why do you enjoy golf so much?

A - I still enjoy the natural atmosphere and the game grows on me, more each year.

Q - Where does the pleasure come in?

A - Anticipating a great shot and the besting of my greatest round.

Q - Do you need super-duper expensive equipment?

A - No, over the last eight years I have spent about $300 on equipment (golf balls not included).

Q - Isn't it frustrating at times?

A - It's not frustrating, because I am improving more every year. That's part of the fun.

Q - Isn't golf too expensive?

A - As a pastime, it's relatively cheap for me.

Q - Is golf really exercise?

A - Yes, I walk 18 holes every week. It's great exercise.

Q - Should you take a cart?

A - Some people can't do the heavy dragging or the long walking. They should decide what is good for them.

Q - What is your favorite course and why?

A - Now it is Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. I am lucky to play on a private course as a Hamlet resident and I play there every year. It is very pristine and very difficult.

Q - Other great courses?

A - Oyster Bay. My best round was an 83. All the courses in the Hawaiian Islands are terrific.

Q - What about the 19th hole? Beer, cola and fun?

A - At the 19th hole at Oyster Bay we laugh and talk about the round we just played.

Q - What does your wife say about your golf day?

A - She is getting more accepting with each year.

Thank you, Nick, for re-answering the questions I put to you in March 1999. It is wonderful to be a witness to such enthusiasm. For me, it was fun to revisit an old column. I enjoyed it, and Nick, both times.
