On August 26, in the early afternoon, the Syosset Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in a commercial building on Crossways Park Drive in Woodbury. Assistant Chiefs John Capobianco and Robert Kaplan arrived on the scene, almost simultaneously.
Chief Capobianco assumed command while Chief Kaplan initiated an investigation. The chiefs quickly advised Syosset dispatch of smoke emanating from the north side of the building, and requested the transmission of a Signal 10 for a working structure fire.__ Engine 5812 hooked up a hydrant and stretched the initial two-and-a-half-inch line to the front door, where they were assisted with forcible entry by the crew of Tower Ladder 582. Upon his arrival, Chief of Department Thomas Feeney took command as Chief Capobianco joined Chief Kaplan in supervising interior fire operations. The fire was brought under control in under a half-hour. Syosset Engines 5855, 587 and 584 also responded, along with Heavy Rescue 588, Ladder 5816, Ambulance 5893 and Fire Police unit 5814. Mutual aid units from Plainview, Oyster Bay Fire Co. No. 1 and East Norwich responded to the scene. Units from Hicksville and Jericho stood by at SFD Headquarters.
The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
