Sunny skies and smiling faces were the order of the day when schools in Syosset opened on Sept. 5th. Kindergarten students, whether arriving by bus or grasping the hand of a parent, were quickly ushered into their schools and appeared ready to take their places at their new schools. Returning students greeted friends, teachers, and administrators happily, and confidently went on to their new classrooms.
District residents have received the school calendar and will want to note some of the events scheduled for September. Since printing, the date of the elementary school Open House has been changed from Sept. 18 to Sept. 19, because of a conflict with New York State Primary elections. The first home football game will be on Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. The Homecoming game is on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. against Hicksville.
Student activities began in full force, beginning day one, and in the case of many high school athletic teams, even earlier. Syosset High School's new band teacher, Paul Caputo, introduced himself to the students on the first day and informed them that they would be playing at the first football game of the season that coming Saturday-just three days away. Principal Dr. Jorge Schneider read a very long list of announcements about some of the many clubs and organizations that would begin meeting right away. Freshmen were encouraged to join and discover the many opportunities available to them.
All seven Syosset elementary schools have new playground equipment for the students. The colorful units include slides, climbing apparatus, and more in configurations that spark imaginations that are sure to invent many different games to play.
New faculty members include 50 teachers and a new principal, Joanne Mannion, at Berry Hill School. Each school has new faculty members, with 19 joining the Syosset High School faculty.
"This is going to be a year of celebration for Syosset," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carole G. Hankin. "We have many reasons to be thankful and to celebrate the successes and achievements of our schools and the members of our school community. We're going to make a special effort to recognize these events and share the good news with one another."
