On Sunday, November 4, the 15-year-old Jericho Jay Sox swept a doubleheader from the Long Island Storm by scores of 10-0 and 13-1, to capture the National Junior Baseball League Championship with a 12-2 record. This is the team's second NJBL Fall Championship in as many years, and their third NJBL title since 2004. The Sox received outstanding pitching from Stefan Weiss in the 1st game as he pitched a complete game shut out. The Storm loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 3rd inning, but the Jay Sox wiggled out of trouble when catcher Jason Fellows threw behind the runner on 1st base. Jay Sox 1st baseman, Eric Schwarz, made an acrobatic dive and tag to end the Storm threat. The Jay Sox struck early and often at the plate highlighted by a Fellows moon shot over the trees in left field. In game 2, Justin Neuwirt pitched another complete game for the Jay Sox, yielding only 1 run while keeping the Storm hitters off balance all day. He was aided by a Schwarz 3-run homer to right in the 7th inning.
The team was coached by Tom Goren, Peter Hakim, and Bruce Newman. The Jay Sox scored an average of 8 runs per game while only yielding 4 runs per game. Pitching duties were handled by the port-sided duo of Stefan Weiss and Justin Neuwirt who were spectacular. Jason Fellows and Brandon First chipped in with quality innings throughout the season. The catching duties were handled by Matt Newman and Jason Fellows. First base was anchored by the silky smooth Eric Schwarz with help from Weiss and Nick Santoro. Tommy Caruso continued his mastery of 2nd base with help from Jonathan Davis and Phil Fitzpatrick. Short belonged to the steady Derek Hakim. Brandon First handled the hot corner with ease. The outfield was led by Jon Spivak, Nikko Price, Brendan Russell, and Justin Neuwirt. The offense was started by Spivak who has the perfect mix of speed and power. He was followed by the hot hitting Price. The mashers in the middle of the order proved daunting to their opponents. Led by Newman, First, Schwarz, Weiss and Fellows, this group smashed several tape-measure home runs. The tail end of the order came up with steady and clutch hitting all season. Caruso, Hakim, Russell, Davis, Santoro, Neuwirt and Fitzpatrick all helped keep opposing pitchers at bay.
The Jay Sox wish to thank all of their parents, families, friends and supports. A special thanks to the JAA and President Jack Schnitt, Head of Travel Sports, Joel Sweetbaum, and Head of Travel Baseball, Frank Davis. Congratulations to the Jericho Jay Sox, 15-year-old NJBL Champions!
