The Pat Lyons Foundation of Jericho recently presented a check for $60,000 to Winthrop-University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids in support of programs that help to support patients during and after treatment for childhood cancer. The funds were raised at the Fifth Annual Lt. Patrick Lyons Golf Classic, which was held on Monday, September 24, 2007. Due to the extraordinarily high interest in this annual charity event, it was held this year on three Long Island golf courses in order to accommodate the 440 golfers who participated - the Calverton Links and Cherry Creek-The Links in Riverhead and Tall Grass Country Club in Shoreham.

The Pat Lyons Foundation is dedicated to honoring the memory and spirit of Patrick John Lyons, a New York City firefighter who heroically gave his life on September 11, 2001 to help others. The Foundation was established by Patrick's wife, Irene and their son Patrick Mate Lyons, his family and friends to help improve the lives of children.

The Pat Lyons Foundation funded the creation of an innovative new program for survivors of childhood cancer at Winthrop-University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids. This long-term program, Generation of Survivors, follows childhood cancer survivors through adulthood to monitor their health and to help them deal with potential late effects from live-saving treatments that were used to treat their cancers. This donation brings the Foundation's total support of Winthrop's Cancer Center for Kids to $280,000.
