With their No. 1 starter and cleanup hitter Jonathan Doyle on the injured reserve list (due to a gym injury) and their new left fielder Ben Feder on family leave (his family left for the weekend) the Syosset Woodbury Yankees swept a doubleheader from their good friends the North Syosset Indians winning the first game 6-5 and the night cap 15-8.

The Indians got off to a fast start taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Yankees battled back in their half of the inning when Zack Schwartz knocked in two runs with a double. The Indians padded their lead with a run in each of the third and fourth innings but then the Yankees went to work. They scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a walk to Jared Blech and a triple by Ari Chaskes (who scored on the throw) and Schwartz shut down the Indians for two and two thirds innings in relief. That brought the game to the bottom of the sixth with the Indians winning 5-4 and the Yankees looking for some more late inning heroics... they were not disappointed.

With two outs and the Yankees trailing by a run in the last inning, things were looking bleak. Then with a Yankee on first, captain (for the game) Ian Berg followed with a hit and Chaskes walked loading the bases and setting the stage for the Yankees No. 3 hitter, Jason Beck. Beck rifled a double to left field for his second game winning RBI in three games, knocking in the tying and wining runs. Yankees win 6-5.

The second game was a slug fest highlighted by a continuation of outstanding fielding by the Yankees outfield (who combined for six putouts for the day) and solid pitching by Chaskes and Albano (making his first appearance on the mound this season). This time it was the Yankees who got off to a fast start scoring four unanswered runs in the first inning as a result of hits by Captain (for the game) Chaskes and Beck and RBIs by Beck, Dom Caputo, Schwartz and Matt Avidon.

In the top of the third, the Yankees scored five more runs on hits by Aiden Albano, Caputo and Beck and a double by Chaskes. After Avidon scored in the fourth the Yankees finished up their barrage by scoring five more runs in the fifth in a rally that included an intentional walk to Caputo and a double by Schwartz. Yankees Win 15-8.

Regardless of the scores it was a pleasure for both teams to play in such a supportive and friendly environment.

The Yankees have had players from Jericho, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Woodbury and New Jersey (Hoo is from NJ); there are no residence requirements. You can live anywhere as long as you can make the practices and the games.

To be eligible the player must have been born after April 30, 1996, must play competitive baseball, and must have families who recognize the commitment but understand the priorities.

Tryouts are held at team mini practices in an attempt to evaluate the kids in a non-pressurized setting. The purposes of these practices are to spend a little more time focused on the individual needs, and to give the kids some individual attention. Baseball skill and attitude are equally important to us and are given equal weight in the decision making process.

The Yankees will be adding a player or two this summer. If you are interested in being considered you should send an email to info@swyankeesbaseball.com.
