The Jericho Jay Sox Summer Baseball Team, coached by Tom "The Bear" Goren, Phil "Big Dipper" Weiss, and Gary "Nap" Strauss, finished in second place at the recently completed North American AAU Baseball Tournament at the Dan Duquette Sports Academy in Hinsdale, Massachusetts.
The team started the tournament playing a team from North Toronto, Canada on Friday night. Tyler "Bones" Russell pitched six solid innings in the opener. He wiggled out of a jam in the bottom of the last inning, inducing a ground out to short with the winning run perched on third base. The Jay Sox responded by exploding for six runs in the first extra frame before the game was suspended due to darkness, The Sox completed the game the following day for a 10-4 win. On Saturday morning, the Jay Sox next faced a tournament tested team, the Franklin Square Seminoles, who had placed second at an AAU Tournament in Disney earlier in the summer. The Sox, behind the pitching of Danny "The Dog Whisperer" Carlone and Ryan "The Flopper" Corcoran jumped out to an early 7-1 lead and held on for a 10-7 victory. On Saturday afternoon, the Jay Sox faced a team from New Hampshire, the Litchfield Arsenal. Kyle "The Toe" Becker and Adam "Roids" Shapiro battled the Arsenal hitters until the Jay Sox pulled out a victory in the top of the last inning to win, 7-6. Unfortunately, the Jay Sox defense did not continue its stellar play into the championship game on Sunday. The Jay Sox once again faced the Seminoles. Michael "Scoops" Goren, took the mound for the Jay Sox in the championship game. He induced a 1-6-3 double play in the top of the first to get the Jay Sox out of trouble. The Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their half of the first. Unfortunately, that would be the only runs that the Jay Sox would score on the day. The Seminoles scored four unearned runs to take the championship, 6-2.
The team had solid hitting throughout the tournament. Several Jay Sox enjoyed solid hitting performances including Chad "Raise your hand" Cohen, Matt "Crowne Plaza" Lesser, Matthew "Shades" Kiviat and Ryan "The Surfer" Condon. The defense was solid led by Jared "Little Dipper" Weiss, Max "The Fan" Strauss, Bradley "The Cough" Fischer, Joe "The Sheik" Velotti, and Matthew "Clean up this mess" Rothman.
The team had a huge throng of supporters at the three day tournament, and the team wishes to thank them all for their support. A special thank you to Lisa "The Emailer" Goren, for organizing the trip, and Doug "Stormy" Fischer for his constant weather updates. Finally, once again, Sal "Bat Boy Supreme" Velotti, was voted as the AAU Bat Boy of the Tournament by a panel of AAU officials. Congratulations to Sal and to the Jericho Jay Sox!
