Syosset Soccer Wins Fourth Straight A Title

In an outstanding show of teamwork and excellent play, the varsity soccer team captured their fourth Nassau Suffolk Catholic High School Girls Athletic Association A Soccer title with a convincing 3-0 victory over Holy Trinity in the title game played at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset.

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Mustangs got on the scoreboard on a goal by senior and most valuable player of the ame, Annie Brozek with 22:10 remaining. Sophomore Emma Glynn added a second goal on an assist by senior Kaitlyn Vitale with 10:05 remaining and at 5:20 remaining, junior Rebecca Walsh rounded out the scoring on an assist by senior Shannon Brady.

An outstanding play from senior goalkeeper Jen Sparacino, stopper Liz Stiles and outside backs seniors Mary Beth Cassaro and Gina Cacchioli along with strong play from junior Ashley Scoyni and outside wings, freshman Caitlin Kelly and senior Kaitlyn Vitale showed a strong commitment to a deserving win.

Special congratulations are given to the following players: Annie Brozek—Most Valuable Player of the Game; All-League Selections: Mary Beth Cassaro, Gina Cacchioli, Mackenzie Earley and Shannon Brady; Outstanding Player of the Year—Shannon Brady (Three-time selection).

The varsity soccer record for the 2013 Season was 12-6-3. Congratulations to head coaches Dick Hogan and Kathleen Harrigan and to all members of the varsity Lady Mustangs: Shannon Brady, Annie Brozek, Gina Cacchioli, MaryBeth Cassaro, Mackenzie Earley, Kaely Gallagher, Emma Glynn, Devon Igoe, Caitlin Kelly, Tara Lally, Danielle Macedo, Grace Meegan, Emma Murphy, Maggie Murphy, Lindsey Neglia, Rebecca Reardon, Meghan Scanlon, Ashley Scoyni, Jenn Sparacino, Maura Sharkey, Elizabeth Stiles, Kaitlyn Vitale, Rebecca Walsh; Managers - Sarah Lynch, Margaret Morrell and Erin Earley.

Eight students from Jericho High School, the largest number of students from any school on Long Island this year, are among the 300 semifinalists picked from 1,800 entrants nationally and overseas in the annual Intel Science Talent Search.

Brookville’s Green Vale School students were featured in the September/October 2013 issue of Sport Rocketry, the official journal of the National Association of Rocketry.

The seventh-grade students competed nationally at the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) last May in Virginia and were the youngest rocket scientists competing. They were also the only team from Long Island that qualified to enter the competition and one of only two teams from New York State.


Sports

The Syosset Braves 11-year-old football team recently won the Superbowl Championship Game against the Rosedale Jets with a final score of 13 to 0.

The Farrell & Schmidt Ho Ho Ho 5-Kilometer Run started and finished at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Bethpage on Dec. 21. The top local finisher was Tim Mahony of Syosset, who scored in 11th place overall and third in the 15 to 19 age group.

Other locals winning awards in this year’s Ho Ho Ho Run were Gina Ferraro of Syosset (2nd woman, 35-39 age group), Patty Santella of Syosset (3rd woman, 45-49 age group), Kim Solomine of Syosset (2nd woman, 55-59 age group).
