Kristallnacht Obeservance

The feature film Defiance vividly portrayed the actions and heroism of the Bielski Partisans, a group formed by four brothers, to resist the Nazi occupiers of the area of Poland now called Belarus. Following the Germans’ Operation Barbarossa, the Bielski brothers, Tuvia, Alexander, also known as ‘Zus’, Asael and Aron managed to flee to the nearby forest after their parents and other family members were killed in the ghetto in December 1941. After the war, Tuvia and “Zus” eventually settled in the US, where they operated a successful trucking business. None of the Bielski brothers sought any recognition or reward for their actions. Louis Bell and his nephew Robert Bielski (Tuvia’s son) will be at Temple Or Elohim, Jericho, for the annual observance of Kristallnacht. Personal recollections of their family’s participation in the event’s depicted in the film as well as private videos of the actual people and events will be presented. 7 p.m. Call 433-9888, ext. 10.

Kristallnacht Observance

At its annual Kristallnacht observance, the Jericho Jewish Center, 430 North Broadway, Jericho, commemorates the 70th anniversary of the tragic sailing of the SS St. Louis, in conjunction with the Emmy nominated film Inheritance. This is the story of Monika Hertwig, the daughter of mass murderer Amon Goeth, commandant of the Plaszow Concentration camp, meeting with Helen Jonas, who was enslaved by Goeth and is one of the few living eyewitnesses to his unspeakable brutality. The camp and Amon Goeth were depicted in the film Schindler’s List. The film will be introduced by Jericho resident, Vivian Delman, Helen Jonas’ daughter. 7:30 p.m. Call 938-2540.

Women’s Focus Group Meeting

The Women’s Focus Group of the Nassau Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, chaired by Lisa Haynie, CPA, is hosting a luncheon open to all professional women. Scholar-in-Residence Weekend

The community is invited on Nov. 13 (8 p.m.) and 14 (9 a.m.) for lectures by Rabbi Professor David Golinkin, Jericho Jewish Center’s Scholar-in-Residence. Professor Gilinkin has served as president of the Schechter Institute in Israel. He will bring his sizeable knowledge base, to address issues on halacha, Jewish law, his chosen field of expertise and will use his unique perspective to explain the differences between the goals of the Conservative movement in the United States and the goals of the Masorti movement in Israel. 430 North Broadway, Jericho.
