Over 60 ... And Getting Younger: January 12, 2012

Cabinets

It was like a dagger in the heart.

“Your kitchen is so dated,” was the remark that belittled the Greenberg kitchen. It was true that we were living with the original cabinetry from the builder when we moved into our new home on April 3, 1983. How do you get outdated so quickly?

The cabinet doors still close well and they still manage to hold our spices and cans of tomato soup. The wine cabinets and the varied types of glasses are ensconced comfortably. Vitamins and fish oil fit comfortably into their space. The knives and forks and spoons all lie in their spots.

So why do we need to spend thousands of dollars to update our beautiful, functional cabinets? I am old enough to remember President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s cabinet in the 1930s and early 1940s: Henry Morgenthau, Harold Ickes, Frankci Perkins, Henry Wallace, Cordell Hull and Henry Stimson were known intimately by the public. Did they ever get outdated?

Removing all the stuff from the shelves is a Herculean task. Lorraine did not trust me to keep the glassware and dishes intact on removal so she did the whole job herself.

Oh, I forgot to tell you!

We are getting a new stove, a new refrigerator, a new dishwasher and new upper and lower ovens.

Our kitchen exhaust fan didn’t pass the test and so it is also on the way out, being replaced by a more modern looking appliance.

Not through yet!

Our countertops did not pass muster. They are Formica and have served us well. Not too many burns and brown and black marks at all. But now we are going to have granite and stone countertops. That should be amazing.

The workmen are revolving in and out of our kitchen like a nest of busy bees or ants. They are superb workmen and I admire their craft and ability.

When, oh, when do I get my kitchen back? Will my kitchen be current now?
