This week we are before State Supreme Court in Mineola proving the validity of citizens petitions to hold a referendum on the sale of public land to Oyster Bay Realty LLC, a group headed by the Simon Property Group, owners of the Roosevelt Field Mall. We expect the court to allow the referendum to proceed on August 20, 2013.
The referendum will give Oyster Bay residents the opportunity to vote on whether they want the land sale to go through or not. If the majority of residents vote no, they can stop the sale of the land to Oyster Bay Realty LLC.
At a meeting in May, the Oyster Bay Town Board chose to sell 54-acres of town land to Oyster Bay Realty LLC through a non-competitive process that had no public notice or input. Oyster Bay Realty LLC has also never stated their development plans for the site.
By refusing to allow a public bidding process, town officials may have cost Oyster Bay millions of dollars in additional revenue that could have helped to keep taxes low and finance more police and teachers.
Long Island Jobs Now! LLC will launch an aggressive campaign in support of the referendum. The effort will inform the public about the secretive land sale process that shortchanged the taxpayers and residents of Oyster Bay. In the coming days and weeks Long Island Jobs Now! LLC will be present throughout the community.
The local residents deserve a chance to have their voices heard on this important town issue. Long Island Jobs Now! LLC is committed to making sure they have the information necessary to make an informed vote.
