The Jayhawks middle school hockey team in its first season has assembled a super group of dedicated players. After five games the team is 3-1-1, and is in second place in a strong A League division. Last past Sunday, the team won an exciting game 8-6 against last year’s champions Long Beach.
The team encourages the community to come out and support them during games. Upcoming games are Monday, Dec. 7 at Bethpage at 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11 at Bethpage at 9 p.m., and Saturday Dec. 19 at Iceworks at 9:30 a.m.
The lastest addition to the growing list of local sponsors who are supporting the 17th annual edition of Rob’s Run, Long Island’s premiere cross country run, is Phil’s Pizzeria & Restuarant, located at 265 Jericho Turnpike in Syosset.
Alexa Riech a senior at Syosset High School has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete Division I Gymnastics for the University of Denver beginning in the fall of 2010. Alexa has been doing gymnastics since she was 4 years old and currently trains and competes at Hot Shots gymnastics in Plainview. She trains over 25 hours a week, 6 days a week.
Syosset Baseball Association’s 55th season serving the community with youth baseball came to a close on Monday, Nov. 2 with the Annual Awards dinner held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury
Each year, this year-end event highlights the accomplishments of the season’s 9-12 year old Divisions with awarding of their trophies for their spring intramural season accomplishments, as well as acknowledging the participation of all Syosset Baseball Association travel players for the 8-12 year old Divisions.
On Tuesday November 10, at the Jericho Terrace in Mineola, the Jericho Athletic Association’s intramural baseball season celebrated a spectacular end to the first year of its revamped intramural baseball program, with the JAA’s 1st Annual Baseball Dinner. The dinner was a huge success that was attended by over 300 people. The highlight of the evening was our special guest, from the World Champion New York Yankees, Brett Gardner.

What happens when you combine great coaching with a team of athletes who have been playing football together for 8+ years? You get the first ever undefeated season for Syosset South Woods Middle School Football Team. The Braves finished their 2009 football season last Saturday with a decisive win over Great Neck North, driving their unbeaten record to 6 - 0. Before Saturday’s game, Head Coach Finnegan reinforced the importance of this final game, reminding the kids about being prepared, concentrating on what’s ahead of them and making Syosset football history. To get to 6-0, Syosset also beat Glen Cove, Westbury, Great Neck South, Friends Academy and Carle Place.
The Syosset Hurricanes reached the finals of the Bruce Gary Columbus Day Softball Tournament in Bellmore on Columbus Day weekend. They lost to Merrick in the championship game but were 4-2 overall to capture second place in their first tournament. The Hurricanes, a SYAC Travel team, also compete in the NJBL Softball League, where they play up in the U12 Division.
With only one week to go in the regular season, our teams are continuing to impress with their skill, dedication and determination. Each and every team has continued to put on incredible shows that have kept our fans on the edge of their seat. Here’s what happened this week:
