New Friendships Form in SYAC Girls Softball

As the SYAC Girls Softball spring season approaches playoff time, many new friendships are being formed on the softball field.

More than 400 girls from Syosset, Woodbury and Jericho participate in SYAC Girls Softball, in four leagues from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Fall 2009 Registration Is Under Way for the JAAs

Registration is underway for developmental (pre-travel) soccer program for kindergarten through third grade and the soccer program for kindergarten through third grade. There will be an informational meeting on June 15 at Jackson Elementary School at 7:30 p.m.

The JAA’s Developmental Soccer Program is designed to encourage individual and team soccer development, in those children who desire more than what the current intramural program (JAA) offers via enhanced weekly training sessions, league and tournament play.

 

Muttontown Preserve Announces Hikes

The magnificent Muttontown Preserve will host two weekend nature events in June.

The first, “Smell the Wild Roses,” on Sunday, June 7, between 10 a.m. and noon, offers participants the opportunity to view a variety of roses in full bloom, along with Autumn Olive, Honeysuckle and Buttercups. During past walks, more than 50 species of roses have been seen along the trails. The tour is three miles over mostly flat terrain that includes the upland woods trail.

 

Syosset Baseball Michael Lewis Wolkis Field Dedication

Syosset Baseball Association would like to invite all Syosset Baseball players and families to the rededication ceremony for the Lewis Lane Field to be renamed, Michael Lewis Wolkis Field on May 30, at 10:45 a.m.

On Oct. 31, 2008, Michael was tragically hit by a vehicle that took his life. Michael, 15 years old, played baseball for Syosset Baseball Association since the age of 5 at t-ball until the end in the Senior League.

 

JAA Seeking Applications for Board of Directors Positions

Persons who reside in the Jericho School district who are interested in serving as members of the Board of Directors of the Jericho Athletic Association (JAA) are invited to apply by written application to be emailed to Jack Schnitt, president of the JAA, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The application should contain the applicant’s name and address as well as a brief statement setting forth why the applicant is interested in serving on the JAA Board.

Applications should be submitted no later than June 1.

Interviews for open positions will be on June 10, with elections of the Board to be held on June 16.

Board meetings are regularly held on the first Tuesday of each month.

The JAA provides, sponsors and oversees athletic programs for school aged children who, primarily, reside in the Jericho school district.

Syosset Girls Lacrosse

Third-Grade

The Syosset PAL third-grade girl’s lacrosse team braved the cold and wet weather on Sunday, May 17 and traveled to Huntington for an early morning game. Once again, the girls put what they learned in practice into action though their competition was fierce and they lost 6-1. The Syosset’s team lone goal was scored by Sophie Levinson. It was a text-book team play. Nicole Avidon cleared the ball to Gabrielle Lindenman on midfield who passed to Sophie who was able to sneak in and score! The team had some great shots on goal by Lauren Tranchina, Sophie Levinson, Gabrielle Lindenman and Samantha Twohig. Jordyn Fells played goalie the entire game and had some good saves. The defense played a great game thanks to Ashlyn Wagner, Nicole Avidon, Rebecca Mackay, and Sydney Fells.

 

Syosset Baseball Association Pitch, Hit and Run Site Competition Results

On April 4, Syosset Baseball Association in conjunction with Major League Baseball and Aquafina hosted the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition. The multipurpose turf field provided a great venue to host this exciting event.

Below are the results from the competition and those players from our league who will be advancing on to the Sectional competition on May 17 in Amityville, New York.

Syosset Girls Lacrosse

Third-Grade

The Syosset PAL third-grade girl’s lacrosse team had a busy weekend. The team watched the SHS girl’s varsity lacrosse team play Friends Academy on Friday afternoon. During halftime the team did some drills and throughout the game coaches Karen Vacchio, Andy and Carolyn Stephenson explained strategies to the eager young girls. On Saturday, the team held its practice and put what they saw at the varsity game into action. Then on Sunday, May 10 the team played Farmingdale at the high school field. Though it lost 7-4, every game this first-year team gets better and better. Meghan Balos played goalie the entire game and had a lot of terrific saves. Two goals were scored by Taylyn Stadler and the other solo goals came from Gabrielle Lindenman and Camryn Smithwick. Samantha Twohig stuck with her opposition on defense. Rachel Fajiram hustled for the ground-balls on attack and Danielle Pitta played with great determination, never giving up on midfield.
