Syosset Baseball Association’s (SBA) traditional Memorial Weekend All-Star games will be held on Saturday, May 26 at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. The day will start off with an 8:30 a.m. 8-year-old division All-Star game, followed by the A division (9-year-old) game at 10:45 a.m.
A 1 p.m. game will feature the AA Division (10-year-old) players followed by a 3:15 p.m. Major League Division game. In the major league game, the first pitch will be thrown by Deacon Murphy whose son, Brian, an SBA player, died from an illness several years ago; the games are named in his honor.
The major league game will be followed by the 5:30 p.m. AAA Division game (comprised of 11/12 year-olds). The evening will finish with the Turnpike Challenge games featuring Syosset’s 9/10-year-old All-Star team versus Jericho on one field and Syosset’s 11/12-year-old All-Star team versus Jericho on the adjacent field. Syosset will be trying to defend their 2011 championship, with the winner awarded the Turnpike Challenge trophy, which has been displayed at Phil’s Pizza for the past three years.
Throughout the day, SBA will be holding a Pitch Hit and Run competition for players in the 8-year-old division through the 12-year-old division, with awards to be presented to all winners in each division competing.
The complimentary traditional barbeque, available to all SBA members including players, parents and their guests will be available to enjoy. For the younger siblings who come to watch their brother or sister play, there will be an inflatable bouncing station as well as a dunk tank.
The Long Island Ducks Mascot will be joining the festivities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be given the honor of throwing out the first pitch for the A Division game. There will also be another special guest joining SBA in the afternoon, which all members and players will be able to meet and greet.
Event organizers look forward to SBA members coming down to the park to enjoy a great day of baseball in Syosset. Detailed information on the day’s events can be found on the website www.syossetbaseball.org.
In addition, please join the SBA as the players march in the annual Memorial Day Parade down Jackson Avenue on Monday, May 28. The parade will assemble at The Variety School on Humphrey Drive, down the road from Burger King, starting at 9 a.m. The parade starts at 10 a.m. from The Variety School, proceeds down Jackson Avenue into town, wraps around towards Split Rock Road, making a left at the Shell Station, another left past the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall where Syosset veteran’s will be watching, concluding at the LIRR train station for a short memorial ceremony.
