The Syosset Braves 8-year-old Cheer Team had a very exciting day this past weekend. The girls had to get up early, put on their uniforms and head to Citifield Stadium in Queens. The reason? The Mets were hosting Cheer and Dance Day. The Braves arrived at Citifield and were greeted by over 500 cheerleaders, ranging from elementary school teams, to high school teams, all the way up to college level. Even the championship Hofstra Cheer Team was there. The day was led by members of the Jets (football) Flight Crew Cheer Team.
The Jets led the large group through an hour-long rehearsal, right out in the parking lot of Citifield. It was an incredible sight and the girls could feel the spirit and excitement in the air. The Braves did a fine job of keeping up with the rest, even though their team was one of the youngest in attendance.
Once the practice session ended, it was photo-op time with the Jets Cheerleaders; the Braves were ecstatic. Next, it was time to make their way into the stadium. The Braves were so excited that they broke out into a rousing round of hometown cheers. “We are the Braves,” and “SYO - SS – ET” could be heard throughout the parking lot. The girls were escorted into the stadium by Nicole Annese, the Mets’ event organizer, who patiently answered all of their many questions while smiling and coordinating the entire event through her walkie-talkie.
Once inside the stadium, the girls got a front row view of the baseball diamond and watched a few players warm up as well. Finally, it was show time. The Braves were the first team led out onto the field and lined up, as the rest of the teams of cheerleaders made their way out onto the field behind them.
The Jets Cheerleaders came out and led the performance, while the Braves and all of the Cheer teams put on a great show. The girls danced to Shook Me All Night Long, I Love Rock and Roll, Glory Days, and a few other stadium songs. Once the routine was done, the crowd cheered and the parade of cheerleaders left the field. The Mets treated everyone to a commemorative T-shirt, making the day even more memorable.
Now that show time was over, it was time to sit back, relax and watch the game. The Mets did their part in making the day a success by winning the game 4-3 against the Florida Marlins.
The Braves would like to thank the Mets, Nicole Annese and the Jets Cheerleaders for a great Cheer experience. The team can’t wait for next year’s Cheer and Dance Day.
