Dates have been announced for families to register girls to play SYAC Girls Softball in spring 2013 and to be evaluated for a team. Each year, hundreds of girls in Syosset, Woodbury and Jericho, from grades K-9, play softball with SYAC. The program has been held each spring for the past four decades.
SYAC will hold registration and evaluation sessions in the small gym at H.B. Thompson Middle School to evaluate skill levels to form balanced teams. Girls should wear sneakers and bring a fielding mitt. Girls may also bring a bat, though bats are provided. All girls who register and are evaluated are placed on teams. The cost for the season is $130.
Register online any time at www.syacgs.org, then attend a registration and evaluation session for a brief skills evaluation. Alternately, families can sign up for a registration and evaluation session and bring a check. Girls in grades K-1 do not need to take an evaluation; all others must do so. Children of all ages may come to any registration session. Dates are Thursday, Jan. 24, 7 to 9 p.m.; Wednesday, Jan. 30, 7 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 16, 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, visit www.syacgs.org.
SYAC also invites parents to volunteer to coach SYAC teams. There also are opportunities for local businesses and organizations to sponsor SYAC teams. Team rosters are announced in March. SYAC then holds skills clinics to help the girls learn the game—and to help parents be good coaches. The season begins in April and lasts into early June, when playoffs are held. Games are held on weekday evenings, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
