The Syosset Hurricanes reached the finals of the Bruce Gary Columbus Day Softball Tournament in Bellmore on Columbus Day weekend. They lost to Merrick in the championship game but were 4-2 overall to capture second place in their first tournament. The Hurricanes, a SYAC Travel team, also compete in the NJBL Softball League, where they play up in the U12 Division.
The weekend was highlighted by a come-from-behind win in extra innings, as the Hurricanes topped Franklin Square on a two-hour, walk-off home run by Samantha Molloy. In the six games they played, the Hurricanes got timely hitting and aggressive baserunning from Sam Molloy, Priya Suresh and Emily Darpino. The defense was tight, with Jenn Schneider, Kylie Marlow, Madison Ramirez and Alysa Carr turning in sparkling plays. Outstanding pitching was turned in by Kayla Beovich and Rachel Hirschheimer, as well as Juliana Ventricelli who came through huge when she was called on to pitch in the extra-inning victory. Cheering on the victorious squad and serving as good-luck charm was teammate Sarah Garner, who sat out the tournament with an injury.
